WHAT FIRST COMES TO MIND WHEN WE SEE THE WORD 'PERILOUS'?

Perilous : dangerous, hazardous, treacherous, threatening, unsafe (Merriam-Webster definition)

For most people the word 'Perilous' is commonly associated with pandemics, pestilences, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, severe flooding, droughts, famines, wars, massive forest fires and so forth. The word is widely used to describe 'acts of God' but is rarely used to describe human behavior and attitudes.

LOOK OUT FOR PERILOUS TIMES IN THE LAST DAYS (2 TIM 3:1-13)

The Bible uses 'Perilous' to refer to human behavior and attitudes in the End Times that will become the norm and will be widely acceptable as natural human behavior. This will be so because what is written in 2 Tim 3:1-13 describes sinful man in the way they 'naturally' behave. However, true followers of God in Christ will be bron again into new creation, their hearts divinely circumcized to distinguish between what is right in God's eyes and what is not. We will know that we are in the End Times when human conduct shows signs of taking a turn for the worst but becoming increasingly normalized. This had occurred once before during Noah’s days when the enitre world had become corrupt and violent. The Bible records that God was justified to righteously drown and destroy all of mankind at that point. Only Noah and his household, a total of only eight men and women were spared to re-populate the earth afresh.

Godlessness and lawlessness will once again be the new normal across the world in the End Times. God will once again judge the world and this time, His actions will be swift and severe. He promised not to use water ever again but this time, He will use fire. "But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." 2 Peter 3:7

2 Tim 3:1-13 is a prophetic signpost given to believers to help us discern the times. Is human behavior starting to display or is already showing the stress signs of 2 Tim 3:1-13? Are we witnessing a world where more and more, people are becoming "lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers,"? Is TikTok, Facebook and other social media a picture of a self-loving and self-absorbed society. Are selfies a mirror of our self-obsession? Are we hearing the Lord's Name being regularly used as a swear word on video streaming platforms and movies?

Are we seeing an increase where people are "despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power"?

As we go through the 'checklist' of 2 Tim and before we answer Yes or No, discern the times not just in your immediate community, but by going online and seeing reports from researchers such as Barna, Lifeway Research or Pew Research. The studies are US-centric but what better signpost than the US, the nation that is most in-the-news and the primary exporter of Western culture, trends and lifestyles that has and continues to influence generations all over the world. Think Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Apple,Coca-Cola and Levi's, for example.

The US was founded on the Judeo-Christian values of the Bible. The US is the only nation where the majority of its residents profess Christ, at least culturally. For over a century, America has sent out the most number of missionaries into the world. Today, some of the most dedicated and truly Bible-based preachers are from the US. That is why the US is a global signpost of the highest visibility. Events in the US make front page news and the world pays attention to what takes place in places like Hollywood, Los Angeles (unashamed liberalism, vanity and narcissism), Wall Street, New York City (unashamed greed) and Washington, D.C. (unashamed human politics and hypocrisy).

God gives us prophetic signposts that will inadvertantly impact Christians all over the world. Events and milestones are obvious and apparent so that we won't miss them. That is why we cannot limit our views based merely on a localized experience such as in the town, city or locality where we reside.

OBVIOUS DECLINE OF MORALITY

At about the time when Jesus is about to return, it will be characterized by an obvious deterioration of morality, conscience and sensibility. Good will be called evil and evil will be called good. The perilous behavior is dangerous and threatening to believers so much so that true followers of God's Word are to prepare for this perilous journey that will impact us who seek to live godly lives according to the Bible.

God opens the eyes His people to see a corrupted world where the behavior and attitudes written of will become the new normal and will be widely accepted in society. The time will come when God will remove His restraint to allow the depraved nature of sin to conspicuously show its true colors without shame and conscience. An important signpost indicated here is of a generation that will be lovers of self and pleasures more than lovers of God and His holiness and righteous laws and statutes. This is a signpost that the Bible has alerted us to and if we are in Christ, we can already 'see' signs of "the last days perilous times".
3	"1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one." Ps 14:1-3	Why do people deny the existence of God? If there is no God that has instituted holy, righteous and perfect moral laws, there is no God to be accountable to and if those laws are non-existent, there is nothing to break. And if there are no laws to break, then there will not be any judgment and punishment. Hence, every person can become a law unto himself apart from secular law that governs him.
4	"11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. 12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. 13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. 14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men." Prov 30:11-14	Throughout time, there are sinners but there is coming an entire generation of 'super' sinners that will be worse than all previous generations. 5	"10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." 2 Thess 2:10-12	The truth is that "God commendeth his love toward us" while we were yet sinners and sent Jesus to die on the Cross for our sins (Rom 5:8-12). People have rejected the truth that God loves us so much as evidenced in Christ's sacrifice. When sinners continue to delude themselves in their deceitfulness and unrighteousness, God will grant them their wish to their heart's content and seal their fate.
6	"And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness." 1 John 5:19	John in his time which was around the same time when Paul lived, reinforces the wickedness in the world that already existed at that time. This verse establishes the separation of the people of God from the wicked world of unrepentant sinners.
7	"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." John 3:19	Prior to our salvation and being born again as a new creation, we cannot deny the corrupt state we were in. If not for the grace of God, none of us would be saved. Heaven would not have a single soul if not for God's mercy.
8	"28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." Romans 1:28-32	Rom 3:11 says that "none that seeketh after God." It is one thing not to seek God but it is altogether something else when the love of God in Christ is made known and sinners push God out of their minds. Just as in 2 Thess 2:10-12, lawless sinners "received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved." and will push God out of their minds. They keep rejecting Him and so He gives them over to a mind filled with such filth and corruption that they will spiral their way into eternal damnation without hope.
9	"And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold." Matt 24:12	EviI, wickedness and immorality will increase and multiply rapidly which leads to coldness and hardness of heart.
10	"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" Isaiah 5:20	The Lord shows the stark contrast between the Godly and the ungodly and this clearly justifies the judgment and wrath that must come.
11	"37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." Matt 24:37-39	There is nothing extraordinary or unique about the lifestyle described. These are regular and normal activities just like today. During the chaotic events of the second half of the Tribulation, after which Christ returns, this signpost is really emphasizing how self-absorbed society will be and as Rom 1:28 points out, "they did not like to retain God in their knowledge".
12	"19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." John 3:19-21	Sinful and evil acts are committed in secret, are kept hidden and often in the cover of darkness. That is why man loves darkness and hates the light of God that exposes sin and shows it for what it is.
13	"10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God." 1 Cor 6:10-11	Thanks be to God, He has washed, sanctified and justified us and has assigned us a place in the ark that is Jesus.
