Key Points

  • Where we will spend eternity comes down primarily to God's mercy and our single most important life-changing decision.
  • Tragically, sinners who reject Jesus as the propitiation for their Sin will be cast into the Lake of Fire.

The Word

  • "And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power;" 2 Thess 1:7-9
  • "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Rev 20:14-15

Description

THE LIVING DEAD

God decreed in Eze 18:4 that the soul that sins shall die. People who generally believe in the afterlife hold to the concept of judgment, that a man's soul cannot go scot-free without some form of judgment for 'bad' actions, according to the laws of that particular religious belief. The Bible states without ambihuity, "The soul who sins shall die." Eze 18:20. This was the deception of Satan through the serpent in the garden of Eden. Eve was told, "You will not surely die." Gen 3:4.

While Adam and Eve did not physically die from their action, their souls spiritually died because of their sin of disobedience. Thereafter, man is born a sinner in the bloodline of the first man Adam who sinned. Through the ages, man may look well on the outside but his inner state is fallen and is sinfully corrupt and filthy, unclean and vile (Isa 64:6, Phil 3:21), contrary to God's holiness and righteousness.

Man is sinfully prideful and thinks highly of himself. The analogy is a weighing scale where all that is not-so-good about a person is placed on the left pan and all that is good is placed on the right pan. If a man's overall 'goodness' and good works outweigh anything that is not-so-good, he gets a pass score.

However, God weighs a man based on the measure of His law written in the Bible. In everyone's lifetime, no one since Adam can keep God's law without breaking a single one (James 2:10). Jesus said in scathing terms, "No one is good but One, that is, God." Matt 19:17. And yet, man will take issue with the Truth that Jesus says. If we, based on self-assessment or by proclaiming the goodness of man, are we then saying that Jesus is wrong or more diplomatically that He is being too negative and not giving credit to the human race? Is man to school the Lord who holds all authority in heaven and on earth." Matt 28:18.

Everyone must eventually give account to God (Heb 9:27). God differentiates the moment when a believer and a non-believer passes away. When a believer passes away, it is as though he goes to 'sleep' one moment and awakes the next with a new soul made glorious and sinless in Christ in the presence of God.

When a non-believer passes away, his soul is dead in sin to begin with (Rom 5:12) and he awakes in a living hell and at the appointed time, will be thrown into the Lake of Fire, the 'final' eternal torment. Sinners who reject life in Christ while on earth, by default will be opting for 'spiritual death' (Deut 30:19).

Both the believer and non-believer will one day receive a 'physical' body that will house both soul and spirit of which the body is designed to exist in the spiritual dimension ie. either in the New Heaven or in the Lake of Fire. The soul and the 'body' will possess human senses namely, touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. The sensation of rejoicing for the believer will be supremely heightened and the agony for the non-believer, will be excruciatingly painful beyond the greatest pain that is experienced on earth and imagined.

The Lake of Fire and brimstone is the 'final' hell and relates to "the second death" (Rev 20:14). This is where Satan, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, all angels that followed Satan and all unsaved sinners, will be tormented day and night, forever and ever (Rev 20:10) where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matt 13:42).
