Key Points

  • God will judge all souls from the beginning of time whose names are not found in the Lamb's Book of Life.
  • Jude 1:14-15 emphasizes the word "ungodly" FOUR times to characterize the souls and what they are judged for.
  • Man in the fallen, idolatrous state, proudly resists God’s holiness and will be brought down low.

  • "14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him." Jude 1:14-15
  • "12 For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: ... 17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. 18 And the idols He shall utterly abolish." Isa 2:12,17-18
  • "For the day is near, even the day of the Lord is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen." Eze 30:3

Description

A number of passages from prophecies in the Old Testament through to the New Testament speak of the Day of the Lord.

It is a day of God’s judgment and wrath that begins in earnest with the Great Tribulation, a three and half year period when God will permit Satan to possess a man the Bible terms the Antichrist (Dan 7:8, 1 John 2:18) having the spirit of antichrist (1 John 2:18, 1 John 4:3). The Bible calls him "that man of sin, the son of perdition" (2 Thess 2:3). He will be supernaturally empowered to rally the ungodly and God will allow him to hatefully come against every person that is chosen by the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (renamed Israel) and everyone saved into Christ. God will only intervene according to His will and purpose, but for most part during this time, will allow the Antichrist to persecute and overcome God's chosen (Rev 13:7).

In the day of the Lord, Jesus will judge all the ungodly from all over the world that will be filled with the antichrist spirit, united by their hatred towards God's people. The day will be of Biblical magnitude. It will be supernatural and cannot be explained as anything but that.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE DAY OF THE LORD (2 Peter 3:10)?

We are told in 2 Peter 3:8 not to be ignorant of this one thing, "that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."?

Our perspective of time is finite and measured in 'earth time' in human years. Most people live until the ripe old age of 80 or 90 whereas God exists in His 'ever present' time that had no beginning and has no end. Our 1,000 human years are but 1 day and even much, much less to God. If the Bible should write that "0.0000000000000000001 day is with the Lord as a thousand years", we would not be able to grasp the meaning of that. Add another trillion zeroes for accuracy to truly contextualize God’s eternal time compared to our finite perspective.

Since the first man Adam, an estimated 6,000 years have passed which is '6 days' to God. God has granted these '6 days' for man on earth. In the Bible, the number 6 denotes the number of man (Rev 13:18). So when God’s day of judgment arrives, God’s 'day' called the Day of the Lord takes place and immediately starts off the Millennial Kingdom thousand year reign (one God day) of Christ on earth.

2 Peter 3:7,9-13 provides a 2-minute reading of the Day of the Lord. Let’s ponder the heart and mind of God and His intentions. What can we learn from this decisive passage?

"7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." 2 Peter 3:7,9-13

1. "But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." v7

Very clearly, the heavens (plural) and Planet Earth as we know it, is still revolving around the sun while we calmly read this where the ground is not shaking beneath our feet. They are being "reserved" by God for the fiery Day of the Lord, for the "judgment" and eternal punishment of "ungodly men".

"ungodly" is the all encompassing word that includes every person that is against the one true God and His Son Jesus, or who does not believe in Him as their Savior who died for their sins. We may ask, given the world’s major religions, is it not the case that many believe in God but from their own religious perspective?

Consider that Christianity is the only faith in the world where God has a Son Jesus whom He sent to earth to be crucified as a sin offering (John 3:16-17). Christianity is the only faith where God grants us the mercy to be saved from His wrath of eternal damnation, where we are completey forgiven by grace and not by our works or effort (Eph 2:8-9). All we need to do is truly repent of our sins and truly believe in our heart that Jesus is the propitiation for our sins (Acts 4:12, John 1:12-13). There are many more verses that empasize salvation through the atoning work of Jesus which are easily searchable online. Even the most charitable, kindest and best behaved person on earth who declines Jesus, will be found in sin and cast into the Lake of Fire.

This is the sticking point for many people who find it difficult to rationalize and accept that a loving God would send a good person to Hell. Rom 3:10-12 speaks to the contrrary. Man has based his goodness and righteousness according to human standards. In the first place, these standards are not even standardized across the world. For example, bestiality which is sexual intercourse with animals is such an abominable act and yet it is legal in a number of so-called 'civilized' first world nations. At the moment, right and wrong is dependent on the so-called righteous standards of man that refuses to abide by God’s perfect and holy standards. Hence, God’s judgment must take place.

By all measure, God is completely fair and applies His laws and statutes without fear or favor to ALL man across ALL generations across ALL time. His righteous commandments have not changed one bit because His holiness and righteousness are in a state of absolute, Godly perfection.

2. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." v9

Some people have wondered why God has allowed the wicked to prosper and not do anything about it. For example, one Hitler allowed to go about his wicked ways is one too many. Why did God not prevent Hitler from murdering six million Jews? Why was he allowed to even murder the first person? Why are there people who hurt other people and get away with it while the heavenly Judge witnesses this but is seemingly indifferent?

God does not close an eye and neither is He blind to EVERYTHING that takes place on earth, even in the darkest, most hidden chambers of a room. God sees all and He will act but in His time. His ways and His thoughts are above ours (Isa 55:8-9). If God is to immediatlely respond to every sinful act with extreme justice, there will be no person alive within days of man's life.

God is Love and in the meantime, He is longsuffering and holds back His hand. He permits the passing of time as an act of mercy as He waits for even the worst of sinners to come to repentance through Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). Be assured that Hitler is being punished (present continuous tense) in Hell ever since God called time on his life on earth. This is not just a lifetime imprisonment or execution of Hitler if he had stood before the International Criminal Court but it is an eternal torment with fire and brimstone in the Lake of Fire. Yes, wicked men do prosper but only for a time. God will mete out the punishment in His time, be assured of that and ALL ungodly people will be judged at the Great White Throne (Rev 20:11-15).

3. "the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night," v10

Bible prophecy has stated that the Day of the Lord will take place just like a thief that strikes unannounced.

4. "10 the heavens will pass away with a great noise … 12 the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire," v10,12

The Bible writes of three heavens, the lowest of which is the immediate Atmosphere, what we see when we look up to the sky and clouds (James 5:18). From the surface of the planet, it extends approx 20 miles above. This is the space that airplanes and birds fly and where God's angels and Satan and the fallen angels travel.

There is the Second Heaven which is known as outer space where the sun, moon and stars are in our galaxy known as the Milky Way (Deut 4:19, Matt 24:29). Beyond the two heavens is the Third Heaven where God resides (2 Cor 12:2, Deut 10:14, Ps 148:4). It is the two 'lower' heavens that will be dramatically dissolved with fire.

5. "10, 12 the elements will melt with fervent heat; 10 both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up … 11 all these things will be dissolved," v10-12

Planet Earth as we know it, will be burned up and dissolved. This will happen in an instant. Isa 51:6 says,"for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment," and in Isa 34:4 "all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree."

If you have not repented to God for your sins and upon reading this, your heart is feeling the conviction of not wanting to be on the wrong side of God and Christ, call out to Him. Then wait for Him to respond to lead you. God’s providence for you might already been ordained before creation, before you were born.
