Key Points

  • The best definition of the Rapture and Christ’s Second Coming is found in the Word
  • The two events are differentiated by their two respective purposes discussed in RP2

The Word

  • "For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." 1 Thess 4:16-18
  • "Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." Matt 24:30-31

Description

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE RAPTURE?

Let us go to the Bible to explain what will happen when the Rapture occurs and for this, we have assembled relevant verses to narrate this imminent event.

  • "this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven. (Acts 1:11) For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (1 Thess 4:16-17) Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." (1 Cor 15:51-52) Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thess 4:18)

THE RAPTURE AND CHRIST'S SECOND COMING - A QUICK COMPARISON

For those who are keen on Premillennial eschatology, we are providing a downloadable Timeline of verses that offer a compelling case for a Pre-tribulation Rapture. Verses of Christ's Second Coming are also tabled in the same Timeline that show the differences between the two prophetic events.

The Rapture - Jesus comes in mid-air to snatch up His bride to heaven (1 Thess 4:16-18) before He unleashes His judgment upon an unsaved world for 7 years (Dan 9:27) in a period called the Tribulation (Matt 24:29) which includes the Great Tribulation (Matt 24:21-22). The day of the Lord (Rev 6:15-17) is also synonymous with the Great Tribulation. Only born again believers (John 3:3-5) alive at that moment and those asleep will be taken and their souls will be given glorified bodies just like Christ's (1 Cor 15:50-53). True Christians experience what is known as the First Resurrection (Rev 20:5-6) which is the resurrection of the just. The 'just' are Christians who are justified in Christ (1 Cor 6:11), having repented of their sins (1 John 1:8-9), believe that Jesus has cleanse us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9) through His atoning sacrifice on the Cross (1 Peter 2:24) and whose names are therefore written in the Lamb's Book of Life (Rev 20:15).

Christ's Second Coming -

After unleashing the wrath of God in the Great Tribulation, Jesus rides to earth leading the armies of heaven on white horses (Rev 19:11-16) to judge the dead in an event called the Great White Throne Judgment (Rev 20:11-15). This is known as the Second Resurrection and the Second Death (Rev 21:8,20:14). This is the resurrection of the unjust, those who are not justified in Christ. They reject the gift of salvation through Jesus and hence, their names are not found in the Lamb's Book of Life (John 3:36). The unsaved are punished with for eternity in the lake of fire which is the final hell (2 Thess 1:8-9, Matt 13:41-42).

Here is an example to begin our examination of 1 Thess 4:16-18 and Matt 24:30-31.

Sno Pre-Trib Rapture Christ's Second Coming
1 "For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." 1 Thess 4:16-18 "Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." Matt 24:30-31
1-1 "the Lord", "the dead in Christ", "we which are alive" [in Christ] (The principal human actors are all living ie. even "the dead" in this verse are born again believers. It is a time of unequalled joy and celebration) "all the tribes of the earth", "the Son of Man", "His angels", "the elect" (The principal human actors are the living, such as the elect and the dead, who are not euphoric to see the Lord but are filled with dread knowing that God is about to judge them at the Great White Throne Judgment)
1-2 "the Lord" (The term used here refers to the Lord God, Messiah and Master, showing the Lordship relationship of intimate oneness with His people whom He went to the Cross for) "the Son of Man" (When this term to describe Jesus is used, one of the purposes in the Bible is to contrast the lowly status of unrighteous humanity against the exalted majesty of God)
1-3 "the Lord Himself" (The verse means exactly what it says just as when we say to someone, "I myself will receive you at the airport". Jesus has not sent anyone else but has come Himself) "the sign of the Son of man" (Before Jesus rides from heaven in His Second Coming, there is first a 'warning sign' to announce that a great event is about to take place)
1-4 "the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven" (The Lord Himself executes the task of gathering but only the just) "He will send out His angels ... they will gather His elect from the four winds," (The Lord assigns His angels the task (Matt 13:49) of separating the wicked from the just at the end of the world)
1-5 It can be said that whenever the Lord appears, it would be with "with power and great glory" but the absence of this description in this event suggests a quiet, private invitation known only to believers and not revealed to the entire world. "with power and great glory" (It is an event of the highest visibility for all the tribes of the earth, meaning everyone, to take notice. The Lord wants it made known that He, the Son of Man, is coming supernaturally, on the clouds of heaven.)
1-6 "(we) shall be caught up ... in the clouds" (A specific path of action) "they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." (This is a different course of action from the Rapture)
1-7 "shall be caught up ... to meet the Lord in the air" (Those caught up converge in the air to be met by the Lord) "they (the angels) will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." (The elect are gathered and met by angels)
1-8 "shall be caught up ... to meet the Lord in the air" (Christ is the source of power that takes up the believers) "they (the angels) will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." (The angels are the 'resource' for the gathering)
1-9 "Wherefore comfort one another" (There is assurance, comfort and hope in this event for believers to look forward to) "all the tribes of the earth will mourn" (Everyone on earth impacted by the event are filled with fear and despair)

THE WORD RAPTURE ORIGINATED FROM THE ORIGINAL GREEK IN THE BIBLE

The English word 'Rapture' has its roots in Latin translations from Koine Greek, the common Greek variation used during the apostles' time. Here is a quick explanation of how the word Rapture came to be in use.

  • "caught up" in 1 Thess 4:17 is translated from harpagēsometha (Koine Greek) = harpazō (regular Greek) = raptūrō (Latin; raptūrus/rapiō/raptus) which means 'caught up | to seize | snatch away | carry off by force | take to oneself | claim for one's self'. Hence the English derivative 'Rapture'.
  • 1 Thess 4:17 in the original Greek Bible reads "epeita hēmeis hoi zōntes hoi perileipomenoi hama syn autois harpagēsometha (raptūrō in Latin) en nephelais eis apantēsin tou Kyriou eis aera kai houtōs pantote syn Kyriou esometha" Source: biblehub
  • The English translation for 1 Thess 4:17 from the Greek reads "Then we the living remaining together with them will be caught away in (the) clouds for (the) meeting of the Lord in (the) air and so always with (the) Lord we will be." Source: biblehub

There are three main schools of Bible interpretation for when the Rapture will occur. In relation to the Tribulation the three are (1) BEFORE the Tribulation (Pre-trib), (2) at the three and half year MID-POINT (Mid-trib), (3) at the END of the Tribulation (Post-trib) which culminates in Christ's Second Coming.

The Bible offers compelling evidence that the Rapture will take place BEFORE the Tribulation ie. it will be Pre-trib, but the Bible is silent as to how long before the Tribulation and exactly when the Rapture will happen.

Having said that, the Bible provides prophecies and signposts to point to how close we might be to the Tribulation preceding the Lord's return. Tribulation Timeline module 'MI1. Significant Milestones' examines key events chronologically and please click "Go To Timeline" on that page for a downloadable detailed set of verses for your consideration to take before the Lord.
