The many counterfeit Christs act as a signpost that we are in the Last Days and sets up the arrival of the final Antichrist.

THERE ARE 'JESUSES' THAT DECEIVE USING CHARISMA
Over the years, followers of these 'Jesuses' have been seduced by the charisma of these counterfeits.
God sent the exact opposite of man's romanticized ideas of Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus at His first coming was a very average and very ordinary man.
Counterfeit Christs can get away with their wicked schemes because people's idea of Jesus is borne out of carnality. When the Antichrist is revealed, will he also display the charisma that appeals to the superficial eye of the world? Does the Bible say that the Antichrist will be charismatic?
THERE ARE 'JESUSES' THAT DECEIVE WITH 'GODLY LOVE'
Many in the world and universalists in the church often quote "God is love" (1 John 4:8) as their religious all encompassing catch phrase. Just as "godly sorrow worketh repentance" and is different from worldly sorrow that "worketh death" (2 Cor 7:10), we should be aware that God's Agape love is different from love based on humanistic values. "God is love" has been hijacked by man to justify the lifestyle of their own choosing. The world and liberal church leaders have conditioned people to perceive Jesus as a non-judgemental best friend instead of a holy God that will judge sin in righteousness.
Intentionally or unintentionally, "God is love" is being distorted to fit a carnal view rather than understood in the context the Bible has intended God's love to mean. Man is seeking endorsement from the Bible to legitimize sin in Jesus' Name. God's pure and perfect love is actually His Agape love to save sinners and His extreme hatred for sin. Both are inextricably linked. Read and understand ...
It is very important to know the Bible and what the Agape love of Jesus truly is. Only then will we, as true disciples of Christ, not be deceived by false teachers, false prophets and any man claiming to be Christ.
IS THIS WARNING MEANT FOR BORN AGAIN BELIEVERS?
In Matt 24:24 there is assurance to the elect but a warning to the non-elect. Jesus says, "insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." which simply means, it is impossible to deceive the elect. Why is this so?
Bible believing Christians won't be deceived by any man with amazing signs and wonders (Rev 13:11-13) claiming to be the Messiah.
IS THIS WARNING MEANT FOR THE JEWS?
Yes it definitely is. When Jesus answered, "Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My Name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many." (Matt 24:4), Jesus was initially speaking to the Jews, the very people He was first sent to redeem (Matt 15:24) who up till today are awaiting the Messianic era.
The chosen twelve disciples of Jesus were all Jewish. When they asked Jesus, "what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?" it was against a backdrop of their understanding of Old Testament end times prophecies. The New Testament and Last Days prophecies such as that we can read in Matthew 24 and Revelation were not yet written. Contextually, His audience was Jewish and was interested to know about His return to usher in the Messianic golden age which they were eagerly anticipating.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews and religious Jews are awaiting their 'Mashiach' (Messiah). They recite and continue to sing the following sentiment for centuries, "Even though the Mashiach tarries, I will wait every day with great anticipation."
THE JEWS ARE AWAITING A MAN, A DESCENDANT OF DAVID
This is the crux of the Lord's warning in Matt 24:24. The image of the coming Messiah exists in Jewish minds. It is based on a set of criteria drawn from Old Testament books. The official description of the Jewish picture of Messiah is in the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Here is another Jewish site of interest about the Jewish Messiah.
THE JEWS' MAN-MESSIAH IS THE BIBLE'S MAN-ANTICHRIST
Christians are eagerly awaiting Israel's redemption. However, given the different perspectives that Christians hold of Christ's Second Coming and Jews' anticipation of their Messiah's arrival, the Jews' man-Messiah is the Bible's man-Antichrist who will first pass himself off as the much awaited savior, arriving just before the Tribulation and at the mid-point of the 7-year Tribulation, reveal his true abominable identity.
Counterfeit Christs today can't deceive the Jews because they are not fulfilling the Jewish 'checklist' above. The Antichrist can and he will gain the trust of the Jews by showing proof that he is their Messiah. He will deliver on two very important promises.
These two proofs will be all the evidence that Israel needs because no one in history has been able to accomplish this feat. The 'Messiah' will be eagerly embraced and his false promises to Israel and the world will be swallowed hook, line and sinker. Three and a half years later, exit the Jewish Messiah, enter the Antichrist.

1 | "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this." Isa 9:6-7 | In Jewish eschatology, the Messiah is a future Jewish king from the Davidic line who will decisively defeat Israel's enemies and usher in a golden Messianic age of peace. At the appointed time known only to God, a child will be born and grow up to take the office of priest and king of Israel, and who will change the world order in accordance to the will of God. Muslim eschatology also has a similar but solely Islamic-centric narrative. |
2 | "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; And shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears: But with righteousness shall He judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and He shall smite the earth: with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of His loins, and faithfulness the girdle of His reins." Isa 11:1-5 | The Jewish Messiah will possess all that is excellent about God. The Messiah will be both priestly and kingly. A picture of this was first modelled by Melchizedek having both offices, something unprecedented in Jewish history. Other than Melchizedek, the priests and kings of Israel and Judah were kept separate and not found in one man. In the Messiah, both offices will be once again combined into one man. A good summary of their expected Messiah is listed in the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. |
3 | "And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven." Acts 1:9-11 | Picture this. You are present with the apostles on that remarkable day, standing together in an open area under a clear and cloudy sky, standing face to face with the Lord. He is life-size, just like you and I, manifest as a man. He gives His final instructions and before you know it, He begins to ascend upwards, levitating higher and higher into the air, becoming smaller and smaller in size as He ascends further and further. Soon He is a tiny figure, very high up near the clouds and in one quick moment, He is covered by a cloud and is no longer in sight. You are told by two angels, also appearing as men amongst you, that the Lord shall return in so like manner. If you had a mobile phone and had taken a video of that event and then play it in reverse, that is exactly how the Lord will return. Premillennialists will be expecting the Lord to return in the Rapture in this manner. Given that Bible-believing Christians have been told in advance and with such detail, the way the Lord will return, surely we would not be deceived by any man walking around and claiming to be Christ? We would be looking out for Jesus to return from the clouds and descend in like manner. So who is this warning for? It can be for professing Christians who have not read the Bible to know what to expect of the return of Christ. It is also highly likely, intended for the generation of Jews eagerly awaiting the return of their Messiah to bring peace and deliver on the nation's dream to rebuild the third temple. In their eagerness and without belief in the the Bible and the knowledge that we have, the Jews will be looking out for the Messiah. |
4 | "And as He sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?" Matt 24:3 "And He said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in My Name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them." Luke 21:8 |
The end of the world. This is not a movie theme or title. It is real. It will happen. When this particular time is near, many counterfeits will arise with the sole purpose of drawing people into a false form of Christianity that promises salvation but will actually lead people into damnation. |
5 | "Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, He is in the desert; go not forth: behold, He is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." Matt 24:23-27 | The elect in Christ will not be deceived. Born again believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit who leads us to all Truth and shows us all things (John 16:13). We know that Jesus will arrive in the clouds (1 Thess 4:17 and Mark 13:26) and not in a private jet or a limousine or a horse-drawn carriage with an honor guard. Bible believing Christians won't be deceived by any man with amazing signs and wonders (Rev 13:11-13) claiming to be the Messiah. |
6 | "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." 2 Cor 11:14 | Non-believers are undiscerning and are not Holy Spirit guided and so will be easily deceive when Satan presents himself as an angel of light. |
